Setting

It is the year 2230, the fiftieth anniversary of the Great Awakening,
and Artemis stands on the edge of tremendous change.

The First Generation -- those rugged survivors who built the city out
of sealed domes, ration lines, emergency shelters, and stubborn will
-- have largely retired from the public stage. Some of their
descendants still cling to Earthly tradition, but the rising wave of
third-generation Artemisians increasingly seek their own paths.

Of course, money is still power. Those born into the luxury of
District Four have the freedom to pursue almost any dream they want.
In the polished towers and climate-secured estates of the city's
elite, ambition is treated as birthright. Meanwhile, the citizens of
chem-fogged District Two fight for every inch they claim, living
beneath industrial runoff, corporate neglect, and the constant hum of
machines older than they are.

Still, every corner of the city teems with life and energy. Homegrown
media has finally taken off under the wings of the fledgling Artemis
Entertainment Corporation. The intrepid broadcasters of the AEC
create both entertainment and journalism, merrily making waves
wherever their lenses turn. Scandals, celebrity duels, worker riots,
missing persons, miracle surgeries: if it bleeds, shines, screams, or
sells, someone is recording it.

Breakthroughs in the use of the still-mysterious mineral artemisium
have revolutionized the world of cyberware. People can now replace
missing limbs with intuitive, durable cybernetics, while implants
promising to improve humanity's natural abilities have begun hitting
the market. For those who can afford them, the human body is no
longer a limit. It is a platform.

Strange doors have been opened too. Study of the planet's mysterious
native creatures, such as the Aurivor, has led to reports of humans
developing abilities that resemble magic. The city has moved quickly
and harshly: such practices are outlawed, researchers are watched,
and those who persist are declared personae non gratae.

"The age of mere survival on this planet is past," declared
Governor-General Adanna Folayan in her recent inauguration speech.
"Now is the time to think about innovation. Audacity. Ambition. This
world is ours, to shape and to conquer."
